Eating in Colmegna: the stop between Maccagno and Luino

The short answer: Colmegna is a hamlet of Luino about five kilometres south of Maccagno, and most people drive straight past it. There are two places to eat, both on Via Palazzi and both right on the water: the Miralago Colmegna, with a lakeside terrace and fish cooking at roughly 20 to 30 euros a head, and the Tiffany Restaurant at the Relais Villa Porta, upscale, with a park and terraces almost at the shore. For dinner with a lake view it is the shortest drive that is genuinely worth it.

Two addresses right on the water, both on Via Palazzi – and the reason to stop instead of driving past.

On the water: Right on the shore · Why the stop is worth it

Right on the shore

Both are on Via Palazzi, a few hundred metres apart, about ten minutes by car from THE CAMP.

Miralago Colmegna

Via Angelo Palazzi 4 – fish and pizza
The name delivers: the restaurant faces the lake and the terrace sits on the water. The menu runs to lake and sea fish – risotto with perch, grilled fish – and pizza as well, which saves the evening with children. Around 20 to 30 euros a head, with more than two thousand guest reviews and a good average. If you are coming for the terrace, book in summer. Google Maps

Tiffany Restaurant, Relais Villa Porta

Via Palazzi 1 – upscale, with a park
The restaurant of the Relais Villa Porta, previously known as the Camin Hotel Colmegna. Cooking between tradition and the modern, with regional ingredients: lake fish such as trout, pike and perch, alongside local cheese and ham. What makes it is the setting – terraces almost at the water and an old wooded park running along the shore. Open for lunch and dinner; whether non-residents can book is worth a phone call first. Why the stop is worth it

It is on the way

between Maccagno and Luino
Driving from THE CAMP to Luino takes you through Colmegna anyway. Instead of hunting for a parking space in Luino, you can stop here and be right at the lake.

The shoreline park

at the Relais Villa Porta
The old trees along the shore make one of the quietest spots on this stretch of the lake. A walk before or after turns the meal into an evening.

Colmegna station

on the Luino–Bellinzona line
Colmegna has its own stop on the railway. If you want wine with dinner, the train solves the way back – check the timetable first, not every service stops.

What you should know

  • We are not paid by any of these places. No commission, no partnership, nothing in return.
  • Colmegna belongs to the comune of Luino. Map services and review sites therefore usually file it under "Luino" – but the restaurants are about two kilometres before the town centre, directly on the shore road.
  • Opening hours are not listed here. Call ahead or check Google Maps, especially outside high season.
  • Parking on Via Palazzi is limited. At weekends and on summer evenings, arrive early or take the train.

Frequently asked questions about Colmegna

Where is Colmegna?

Colmegna is a hamlet of the comune of Luino on the Lombardy shore of Lake Maggiore, about five kilometres south of Maccagno and roughly two kilometres north of the centre of Luino. From THE CAMP it is about ten minutes by car.

Which restaurants are there in Colmegna?

Two, both on Via Palazzi right on the water: the Miralago Colmegna with a lakeside terrace, fish cooking and pizza at around 20 to 30 euros a head, and the Tiffany Restaurant at the Relais Villa Porta, upscale, with a park and terraces on the shore.

Is the Tiffany Restaurant the same as the Camin Hotel Colmegna?

Yes. The house now trades as the Relais Villa Porta and was previously known as the Camin Hotel Colmegna. On review sites the restaurant usually appears as "Tiffany Restaurant Villa Porta" and is filed under Luino, although it is in Colmegna.

Can you reach Colmegna from Maccagno by train?

Colmegna has a stop on the Luino–Bellinzona railway. Not every service stops there, so it is worth checking the timetable – for the way back after a dinner with wine it is the most relaxed option.
